I Wish The Females In The Music Industry Were More United – Seyi Shay
Seyi Shay had an exclusive interview late last night August, 26; and she was as outspoken as ever. She explained, among other things, that there’s not enough unity among the female artistes in Nigeria today. Nigerian Singer Seyi Shay
She was on a Google Hang Out at urban Lagos radio station, Beat FM, where she had a lengthy chat with On Air Person, Douglas Jekan.
“Murda is probably my biggest song till date in the sense of where the song has reached even without any professional push,”she began.
“It just blew on its own and [subsequently] I was signed to an international record label.”
Her career spans over a decade, and she’s steadily climbed the ladders since returning to Nigeria to test the waters.
Shay started professionally at the age of 14, and she began at her school choir, at the London Community Gospel Choir. She and her group then went on a 13city tour of Japan.
The singer who didn’t grow up with her father has her mum to thank for a lot of support in her early years. “She was my all,”she says.
Her mother had told her in those early years that she’d be a big star, but would first have to return to Nigeria for things to materialize.
“Looking back these days it feels scary,”the singer says.
“She blessed me. She saw me in Nigeria.
“Just go. Just do it. Do it with all your heart, your might. And I’m like Mom, I’m o see you in the morning, and that’s it. That’s the last time I saw her,”Shay said.
Emotionally it was for draining for her.“She was my everything,”she adds.
The singer credits Tuface, Sound Sultan and Cecil Hammond for her entry into the Nigerian music circle.
When asked who her main competition in the industry is she says she can’t answer as she sees nobody in that light.
But Douglas Jekan persists and she answers: “You want me to say Tiwa Savage but I won’t. Cuz you know why? I came in with the mentality of ‘I’m coming in to eat, make a difference; I’m coming in to be a bad bxxtch, to take my piece of the pie, so I really didn’t see competition.”
The singer explained, as well, that she had initially ignored the hit songMurdafor six months as she initially felt it wasn’t going to be a hit, nor be played in the clubs.
Her previous singleNo Leleis an interesting piece of work, but the singer doesn’t speak so highly of it. Quite funny. Perhaps an indication of her creative strength?
Her albumOut Of Africais scheduled to drop in November, 2015; and she says the momentum is already building.“The album will contain songs never been heard before and I really can’t wait,”she says.
She also describes her performance with Neyo at the 2015 MAMAs as ‘exhilarating’ and ‘out of this world’; stressing that the fact of the performance being shown in America and all over the world helped boost her image as a singer.
Her response on talks of possible female collaborations was“I really dunno. I wish all the female in the industry were more united [because really] who are we lying to?”As though implying there’s really no love lost between some female artistes in the industry.
She however holds Omawunmi, Efya and Beyonce in high esteem; crediting all three for either of talent and/ or work ethics.
Speaking further on relationship with other females in the industry, she says;“Girls generally have always had a problem with each other worldwide…
“I don’t understand the psychology behind it,”she says.
Given she relates more with guys in the industry she attributes it to her having a bit of a Tomboy nature. This regardless, she is on a soon-to-be-released song with Yemi Alade, Emma Nyra and Victoria Kimani.

Yemi Alade Reveals Why She Is Not In A Relationship
Popular award winning female singer Yemi Alade is not in a relationship now and she is not hiding the fact. The Johnny singer said she is happy being single despite the fact that she is not getting any younger but wait a minute, Alade is not ruling out marriage. She spoke with City Peoplerecently. Read excerpts of her interview.
When did you get your big break?
The biggest break came when I released the song called Johnny. I didn’t officially release it, it was leaked online and it went viral immediately.
What inspired the song because people were saying that you got inspired when your heart was broken by a guy?
The song is a straight forward answer to this question. It has said it all. It is a true life story and that is all. How did you turn it into music?
I was on radio program in Abuja and people started calling and someone said you people are always singing about love, why can’t you do something out of it and I said no problems. Immediately, I got to the studio and I asked myself of a name to use and Johnny came up, I started writing until when I recorded it, I noticed I just did a song on my true life story.
Was that a decision you made after Johnny experience?
Oh no, I realized that if things are not working, you can’t force them to work and that is it. Johnny experience has become things I put behind me, old things have passed away.
Which means you have no interest in marriage?
For sure I will get married someday, when the time comes. How soon?
I don’t know ooo may be if I write letter to God that can be possible tomorrow.
Are your parents bothered about that?
My mum is not pushing me on that, we believe in God’s time.
At what point are you now in your music career?
I cannot tell for now, I still have places to go. I have a big dream of pushing my musical career higher than where it is right now. In five years to come, I see Yemi Alade on billboards all over the world and also bringing in the Grammy Award. I am still very far from where I want to be.
Alade recently lost her cool over the kind of treatment meted out to African artistesduring the just concluded BET awards that was held on Sunday, June 28, 2015 in Los Angeles, USA.

WDF!!! Sad Story Of How Young Lagos Girl Killed Her Fiancé Over S3x Disagreement (See Pictured)
A 24-year-old lady, now in police net, has explained while she stabbed her fiancé, Edet Ebong, to death with a kitchen knife. The lady, identified as Blessing Edet, told our correspondent that the quarrel and subsequent fight which led to Ebong’s death was over s3x.
Blessing, residing at Ogombo village, Lekki in Eti-Osa Local Government Area of Lagos State, said Ebong got angry and pounced on her after she refused him s3x. Recalling the fateful incident of August 18, she said: “We lay down to sleep and he started making advances on me for s3x. I told him I had a hectic day and was tired. He flared up and started beating me.
“He broke the standing mirror in the room and injured me above my left eye with the broken glass. In defence, I ran to pick up the kitchen knife I had used while preparing ‘Indomie’ noodles for him. I mistakenly stabbed him in the stomach.” Rather than look for ways to stem the blood flowing out from his stomach, Ebong allegedly continued to chase his lover round the room until he became too weak.
Blessing recounted: “After stabbing him, the fight continued. He went under the bed, brought out a cutlass and said he was going to kill me. It was at this point that my younger brother who had been trying to stop us, but to no avail, rushed out to call neighbours. “My landlord heard the shout and rushed into our room. He saw Edet bleeding while I was holding a knife. He alerted the police and Edet was rushed to the hospital. Unfortunately he died two days after.” The love birds had been engaged for the past 18 months and were at the verge of finalising their marriage plans when the tragedy occurred.
The late Ebong, an employee of Akwa Ibom State Transport Company (AKTC), had returned to home around 11pm on that fateful day. Blessing, who described herself as an orphan, added: “Edet was my fiancé. We have been in a relationship for about 18 months now. However, six months ago, he had trouble with his accommodation; so I told him to move in with me since we were already engaged.
“We have never had a misunderstanding before. But on that fateful day, I had just returned from the day’s business and was resting when he came in. Edet came in drunk. He requested I prepare ‘Indomie’ noodles for him, which I did. “After eating, he asked me of the engagement ring he had given to me. I told him it was on the table.
This was before he started beating me. Sincerely, I stabbed unintentionally, even while he was in the hospital, I prayed he would survive. I don’t know what came over him that day. We had good plans for the future.
He was not just a lover but also a brother.” Blessing said that she started living alone four years ago, after her aunt told her that her presence in her home was making her husband uncomfortable. The woman assisted Blessing and her kid brother to secure a room apartment. It was this home that Ebong later came to join her. When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Patricia Amadin, said she was still trying to access the full details of the incident at press time. But a resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “It was around 12am and 1am when they started fighting.
They were disturbing the peace of the entire village. I heard the argument. It was about noddle which Blessing’s boyfriend, Obong, asked her to prepare. She prepared it without adding ‘Sardine’ which he had requested.
“The argument led to a fight. Blessing later stabbed Obong. She shouted ‘I will stab you with knife’. And that was what she did. She ripped open the man’s stomach.” Another resident said: “The two friends are from Akwa Ibom State. But Blessing, who is a prostitute, rented a room in this village. Then, she started bearing Amaka. She has no other work than to be sleeping with men and clubbing.”
The resident added that a few months ago, the two lovers had a quarrel which made Blessing to throw out Obong’s belongings from her room. According to her, it was when Blessing could not cope again that she mended fence with Edet.
